The morning following the African Lion Safari, we woke to enjoy a delicious, made-to-order breakfast at the Frederick Street Inn.
We were served eggs Benedict, atop crispy bread with gooey hollandaise. Coffee and eggs were served in owner Harold ‘s own hand thrown pottery.
After another soak in the claw foot tub, we checked out and drove to the Dundurn Castle, located in Hamilton.
After parking in the adjacent free lot, we bought admission tickets in the gift shop and soon found ourself on a self guided kitchen garden tour.
The garden’s bounty included onions, lettuces, squash, flowers, manure tea, and a quaint blue garden shed.
We walked along the grounds and returned for a guided tour of Dundurn Castle.
Our guide was very knowledgeable and shared intruguing stories of the old home.
Dundurn Castle was built in 1835 By owner Sir Allen MacNab, premier of the United Province of Canada during 1854 and 1856.
The Castle is comprised of 40 rooms, many of which are beautifully ornate.
The features of this home were far ahead of its time. In 1850, this manor had indoor plumbing, gas fueled lamps throughout,(including the servants quarters), 3 indoor bathrooms, and a free floating staircase.
The walls are painted to appear as marble. And the flooring and carpet throughout the home is beautiful.
The Castle used the bell system, as seen in the PBS series Downton Abbey.
We enjoyed our visit, and were soon forced to hit the road for our drive home.
